About Rogan Art
Imagine a piece of art so precise, so delicate, that the artist’s tool never even makes physical contact with the canvas. This is the essence of Rogan art, a 1,550-year-old tradition that remains one of India’s best-kept secrets. Often dismissed by Western scholars who believe oil painting began in 12th-century Europe, the truth is far more ancient, tracing back to the 5th-century Buddhist caves of Bihar.
The process is meditative and intense. Boiled castor oil is transformed into a vibrant pigment paste. The artist, using a simple metal rod, pulls threads of this paste into intricate, raised designs. It is a technique that demands total concentration. Today, in the village of Madhapar, Ashish and Komal Kansara are the primary custodians of this heritage. Ashish’s role is particularly significant; he is the only artist to have mastered all three branches of the craft—Rogan, Nirmika, and Varnika. His commitment to this ancient practice is backed by legal protection, as he is an authorized user of the GI Tag (AU/35946/GI/718/1). Through his work, the "Tree of Life" continues to flourish, bridging the gap between the 5th century and the modern day.
