About Rogan Art
The timeline of oil painting as we know it is overdue for an update. While 12th-century Europe has long been the default starting point in art history, the true origin of the "drying oil technique" lies in 5th-century Bihar, India. Through evidence found in the Buddhist caves of Bamiyan, Afghanistan, we now know that this technique was the hallmark of master artisans who served as the disciples of the Buddha.
This 1,550-year-old tradition, known today as Rogan art, is characterized by its reliance on castor oil and the incredible, gravity-defying precision of the artist. The Sanskrit root rangan links the craft to its ancient Indian foundations. In the contemporary sphere, Ashish and Komal Kansara represent the highest echelon of this art in Madhapar. Ashish Kansara, specifically, is a singular figure in the craft, being the only artist capable of executing the three styles of Rogan, Nirmika, and Varnika. His status as a legally authorized user of the GI Tag (AU/35946/GI/718/1) is more than just a credential—it is a vital safeguard that protects the historical integrity of this ancient, meditative, and profoundly beautiful craft.
