Celebrate the artistic heritage of Kutch with the Rann Utsav Dhordo Rogan Art Kala Cotton Bhujodi Saree. This handcrafted saree combines the timeless tradition of Bhujodi handloom weaving with the rare Rogan art painting technique, creating a distinctive textile that reflects the culture of Kutch.

The saree is handwoven from authentic kala cotton, an indigenous cotton of Kutch valued for its breathable texture, natural comfort, and durability. After weaving, skilled Rogan artists carefully hand-paint the fabric using castor oil-based Rogan paste and natural pigments. Every design is individually created by hand, ensuring that no two sarees are exactly alike.

Inspired by the colourful atmosphere of Rann Utsav and the iconic dhordo (tent city), this saree brings together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary elegance. The lightweight handloom fabric drapes beautifully, making it suitable for festivals, cultural events, exhibitions, weddings, and special occasions.

By choosing this saree, you support the living traditions of Bhujodi weaving and Rogan art while owning a handcrafted textile that represents the rich cultural identity of Kutch, Gujarat.

About Rogan Art

Rogan art is truly something special—a 1,550-year-old textile tradition that feels like watching magic happen. Often referred to in English as a "drying oil technique," its origins run much deeper than many realize. While the history of oil painting is frequently attributed to 12th-century Europe, the true roots of the medium actually trace back to 5th-century Bihar, India. Evidence uncovered by UNESCO in Bamiyan, Afghanistan, reveals that Buddhist cave paintings from that era were created using this very same drying oil technique, tracing back to the master artisans who were disciples of the Buddha himself.

It is a painstaking process where the artist takes a paste made from castor oil that’s been boiled for hours and, using only a metal stylus, trails these incredibly fine, thread-like lines of pigment onto the fabric. The most mesmerizing part? The stylus never even touches the cloth; it’s all done through a delicate, steady hand, creating those beautiful, raised, glossy designs that have defined this craft for centuries. The name itself carries that weight of history, rooted in the Sanskrit word rangan, meaning "to dye." Today, contemporary masters like Ashish and Komal Kansara in Madhapar are the ones keeping these stories alive, meticulously hand-painting iconic designs like the "Tree of Life." What makes Ashish Kansara stand out in the world of traditional crafts is his unique mastery; he is currently the only artist who has mastered all three distinct styles of the craft: Rogan Art, Nirmika, and Varnika. As a dedicated guardian of this heritage, Ashish Kansara is also a legally authorized user of the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for Kutch Rogan Craft (Authorized User Number: AU/35946/GI/718/1), ensuring that the authenticity and historical integrity of this work are preserved for the future.
